Henry Lee

English naturalist and writer on marine animals (1826–1888). F.L.S., F.G.S., F.Z.S., and — in the words of his own title page — sometime naturalist of the Brighton Aquarium, where he spent years watching octopus and cuttle through glass. He wrote The Octopus, or the Devil-fish of Fiction and Fact in 1873, and in the summer of 1883 produced two shilling handbooks for the International Fisheries Exhibition at South Kensington, signing their prefaces at the Savage Club seven weeks apart. In them he identified the kraken as a giant squid a decade before anyone could prove it.
